Ahead of the European premier, we asked Kjersti Long some questions, giving us an insight into her life and telling us a little more about the show.
Q1) Please can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself, how you got into writing and some of your highlights in your career so far?
Hey! I’m Kjersti Long I’m a 17 year old singer songwriter from New Jersey. Some of my career highlights include performing at The Bitter End, The Apollo, and the Stone Pony. But most importantly I’m one of the songwriters behind the new atypical Musical Little Piece of You. I started writing the songs for a Little Piece of You at the age of 14, but I’ve been writing since the young age of 9.
Q2) You began to write the music for Little Piece of You when you were 14 years old. Has much of the material changed from then to now?
A surprisingly little actually. We’ve made some small adjustments to match the some of the changes in the script and I’ve done some rewrites since being 14, but most of the music you will hear will be the same or similar to what I wrote at 14.
Q3) Do you have a favourite song from the show?
Yes I do, I have quite a few, but I think my all time favourite is probably either The Disguise or Maggie’s Song. Maggie’s song is the act 2 opener and The Disguise is the 11 o’clock number. But you’ll have to come and see it if you want to learn more.
Q4) This production will mark your European debut for both writing and performing. How does that feel, and what has the rehearsal process been like for you?
It’s been incredible! Dujonna, Mica, and David are amazing at everything they do and I’ve learned a lot just by watching them in their work. The rehearsals have been a long and hard but it’s been so rewarding. I’m excited to see how it comes together onstage.
Q5) Can you tell our readers what Little Piece of You is about ?
Little Piece of You is about a mother and daughter relationship (Shannon and Britt) and how they cope with their mental health and generational trauma and how they learn to communicate and cope but through the lyrical eyes of Britt’s idol, Sydney Hill.
Q6) What is the most influential thing someone has ever said to you regarding your writing/performing career so far?
Hard work beats talent if talent doesn’t work hard. I feel like the quote speaks for itself. It’s been a great inspiration to put effort into all my work
Q7) If you could send a message to your 2024 self what would you say?
Keep it up! You’re getting places and having incredible experiences because of your talent and your hard work, don’t falter!
