SUPERYOU is a new sung-through rock opera musical. This uplifting show centers around the transformative journey of a comic book artist who discovers self-love and her own voice as her superheroine creations spring to life.
After making its West End debut for a sold-out, one night only concert at The Lyric Theatre in 2023, this new rendition of the beloved cult hit is a complete reimagination, now rewritten and presented entirely through song.
Vicki Manser, who has played every Queen in Six the Musical, will star as Katie in this new production of SUPERYOU! Vicki was kind enough to spend her time answering some of our questions, giving us an insight into her life and telling us more about the show.
Q1) Please can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself, how you got into Musical Theatre and some of your highlights in your career so far?
I always wanted to be a dancer for as long as I can remember but when I was a kid I broke my leg twice and the second time it coincided with my dance schools show … which obviously I couldn’t dance in with a broken leg! My dance teacher asked if I wanted to sing a song instead and that’s when I was like ahhhhhh ok I’ll be greedy and do it all! Haha! I’ve been so lucky to a part of so many amazing shows but my absolute career highlight was playing Carole King in Beautiful. I’ve been in the show twice but when I was in it in the West End I was second cover and I had ONE guaranteed show in the contract. I had sooooo many people come and support me and it was just the most magical night that I will never forget.
Q2) SUPERYOU is a new sung-through rock opera musical, when did you first hear about the show and what made you say ‘YES’ to role?
I was part of the original UK workshop 2 years ago so I heard about it then. The casting director told my agent to tell me to listen to the songs on Spotify … specifically Fragmented and To My Angels and that was it … I was like I HAVE TO DO THIS! I didn’t actually originally get cast as Katie and I was a bit gutted I wouldn’t get to sing those songs … but the universe has a funny way of working things out!!!!!
Q3) Do you have a favourite song from the show?
To my angels … it’s been my fave since the very beginning!!!
Q4) What has the rehearsal process been like for you?
I’ve actually loved it because it’s the first time I’ve been a part of something that’s brand new and it’s such a collaborative experience compared to having to do a role that’s already been done and set. It’s so nice to be able to share my thoughts and build the show with the rest of the incredible cast and creatives. There is something very special about watching a new show come to life!
Q5) The show is very musically diverse, what is your favourite style that you like to sing?
Well I’m a country girl at heart. I’m in a band called First Time Flyers and we are a 4 part harmony country band. So that’s my favourite style to sing!
Q6) What is the most influential thing someone has ever said to you regarding your career as a performer?
I’ve picked up a lot of things over the years and learnt a lot from so many amazing people so it’s hard to pin point one specific thing. But I live a lot by ‘everything happens for a reason’ and that if you don’t get a job it’s doesn’t mean you’re not good enough or not talented, it just means you’re not right or the timing is right. What’s meant for you won’t pass you by so trust in the universe …. I’m singing the Katie songs in Superyou now so it does work! Haha!
Q8) If your life was a real-life comic book and you could choose your own superpower, what would it be and why?q
I hate flying and I think I’ve put it down to a fear of falling … so I’d deffo fly! Coz then I will never fall! Haha!
Q9) Why should people come and see SUPERYOU?
Because the cast are actually ridiculous you’d be silly to miss out on seeing them!!!!!!! I’ve honestly never heard so many insane voices in one space! And also … it’s just so uplifting and powerful!
